Dementia Friendly Workshops

Living with dementia is hard. Being dementia friendly doesn’t have to be.

Dementia Friendly Training

We know that most persons with Alzheimer’s or other dementias are not sequestered in special facilities; instead, they are living in the community, alone or with their partners or families, and these friends and neighbors of ours experience special day to day difficulties trying to make their way in the community.

We cannot cure the dementia, but there are simple steps we can all learn that will allow these friends and neighbors to live their best lives with more dignity and less difficulty.

Dementia Friendly Businesses/Organizations

A Dementia Friendly Organization is any business, church, club or other organization whose employees or members have attended a free Dementia Friendly workshop.

Dementia friendly organizations have learned, through our free 45-minute workshop, how to make it less difficult for persons dealing with dementia to be their customer or member.

Our 3/4-hour training session discusses:

  • What dementia is

  • The difficulties that people living with dementia encounter making their way in the community

  • Simple ways in which ordinary citizens can make the lives of their friends and neighbors with dementia less difficult

These sessions are tailored to show:

  • How your organization can easily adapt its interactions with customers or members

  • How to make the experience less difficult for persons living with dementia and their care partners

Besides benefiting those persons, we have the data that it’s also good business.

Participants receive:

  • Dementia Friends Lapel Pins

  • Window clings

  • Website icons announcing their Dementia Friendly Status

  • We can provide scholarships to help with cost of staff attendance

Create a Dementia Friendly Community

Dementia Friends are a key part of a dementia friendly community, and Saline is one of only two such communities in Michigan. The free Dementia Friends sessions are presented by Dementia Champions trained by the Dementia Friendly America organization.

Who Are Dementia Friends?

They are community members who have attended one Dementia Friends information session. They’ve earned recognition as Dementia Friends (and a cool pin to wear!).
